Flat Hill Wind Farm

Situated on the Bluff Peninsula, famous for it’s wild weather, the Flat Hill Wind Farm is ideally placed to fully utilise the southern winds.

Commissioned: 2015

Turbine Details: Eight 71m high turbines with 26m long blades

Annual Generation: 25.2 GWh

Flat Hill Wind Farm

Located on private farmland approximately 3km from Bluff, the 460 hectare site was chosen for its optimal wind conditions and minimal environmental impact. Construction began late in 2014, with the civil engineering part of the process taking almost six months. The eight turbines were shipped to the wharves at the Port of Bluff and transported up to the site at the end of March 2015.

Electricity generated from Flat Hill is embedded into the local network connecting directly to the Bluff substation on The Power Company Limited network enabling the electricity generated to be used locally. Each turbine is designed to run unattended with its own control system monitoring the condition of the machine and its output relative to the wind speed. The turbines will automatically shut down if the wind speeds reach close to the maximum of 28m/s and will restart at 20m/s. There is 1.5km of 11kV cabling running underground from the southern end of the wind farm to the lines company’s substation. The electricity generated is enough to power around 2,600 homes. The wind farm was officially opened on 31 August 2015 and it underwent a sensor and software upgrade in 2017.
