The Dunedin District Energy Centre (DEC) is located on Castle St, Dunedin. Pioneer Energy supplies steam and other services from the DEC to customers, under individual customer supply contracts.

The current customers supplied with steam and other industrial heat supplies are Dunedin Hospital operated by the Southern District Health Board, the University of Otago, Alsco, and Dunedin Central Fire Station. DEC also supplied the Cadbury Factory up until it’s closure in March 2018.

DEC has four water tube solid fuel boilers. There is an extensive network of steam pipework that extends through tunnels and underground to the Dunedin Hospital plant rooms, Medical School and Dental School. All condensate collected is pumped back to the DEC.

In 2023, the upgrade project to convert all four boilers to biomass fuel (woodchip) was completed.
