Pita Te Hori Energy Centre
Featuring ground source heat pumps, the Pita Te Hori Energy Centre heats one of the countries most energy efficient buildings, Te Urutī.
Commissioned: 2017
Heating Supply: 1,700,000 KWh p.a. of 45°C low temperature hot water, for building space heating.
Cooling Supply: Up to 1,500,000kWh p.a. of 7°C chilled water, for building space cooling.
Pioneer Energy has an agreement with Ngāi Tahu Property Limited to provide a centralised heating and cooling system for their building, using the natural aquifer, in central Christchurch. The development is a mixed-use precinct. The energy centre is located on the ground floor of the Pita Te Hori West End Carpark on Hereford Street, Christchurch.
This District Energy Scheme (DES) uses Christchurch’s aquifer systems to provide efficient space-heating and cooling to the site through an underground network of insulated pipes. By using surplus heat captured in the thermal store, the DES can deliver heating with minimal draw on the electricity network, reducing costs and demand on the grid.
The DES has been designed to be capable of providing energy and hot and cold water for the Pita Te Hori Centre and any other building built nearby. The well for the Ground Source Heat Pump is in the building’s courtyard and the plant room for the pump is on street level in Hereford Street.
