Washdyke Energy Centre

Washdyke Energy Centre (WEC) is in the Timaru Heavy Industrial Park and provides local businesses with a very cost effective and reliable source of steam for their manufacturing and processing needs.

Pioneer Energy Renewables supplies steam from the WEC site to three customers via the steam delivery pipeline. The customers are New Zealand Light Leathers, Dominion Breweries South Island Brewery Ltd, and Juice Products New Zealand Ltd.

The Energy Centre is set on approximately one hectare of heavy industrial-zoned land owned by Pioneer Energy Renewables.

The Energy Centre originally consisted of two boilers; a coal-fuelled 10MW saturated steam boiler (Boiler One), a biomass fuelled 11MW superheated steam boiler (Boiler Two), associated auxiliary plant, control room and delivery pipelines.

In 2023, the Energy Centre the coal fired boiler was converted to biomass supply, successfully eliminating coal as a primary fuel source as part of Pioneer Energy Renewable’s sustainability objectives.

The Washdyke Energy Centre has been designed for future expansion. Learn more about how Pioneer Energy Renewables can work with you on your renewable energy requirements, please contact us.
