The Southland Hospital Energy Centre (SHEC) is located on hospital grounds in Invercargill. The asset consists of two 4.5MW Vekos Boilers. The original boilers were replaced in 2005 and 2013.
Pioneer Energy is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the plant and for the fuel supply to the plant. The Energy Centre provides continuous operation, supply steam and hot water to the hospital as required; 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days per year.
The existing Boilers, were coal-fired boilers up until September 2023, when both Boiler's had their Fuel Feed & Control Systems modified to enable them to burn wood pellet fuel, as part of Pioneer Energy Renewables’ commitment to removing coal as a primary fuel source across all thermal assets.
